Tesla's vehicle sales have sharply declined across several European countries, with major markets such as Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway reporting significant drops in the registration of new Tesla cars. According to a recent report by the Financial Times, the downturn is attributed to the growing backlash against CEO Elon Musk's increasing political involvement, particularly his controversial support for right-wing parties in Europe.
Decline in Sales Across Major European Markets
In January of this year, Tesla's sales figures in Germany, where the company operates its only European manufacturing plant, saw a drastic 59.5% drop compared to the same month last year. The number of Tesla vehicles registered in the country fell to just 1,277, a worrying figure for the electric vehicle (EV) giant. Similarly, in France, Tesla registrations plummeted by 63.4%, with only 1,141 new registrations. Other European nations, including Sweden (-44.3%), Norway (-37.9%), and the UK (-7.8%), also reported declines in Tesla vehicle registrations during the same period.
The downturn in Tesla's sales is particularly significant given the broader trends in the European electric vehicle market. According to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, the country’s overall electric vehicle market saw a 50% year-on-year growth in January. However, Tesla's market share took a sharp hit, falling from 14% to just 4%, despite the recovery in demand for electric vehicles following the reduction of government subsidies in 2023.
Consumer Backlash Against Musk's Political Actions
The sharp drop in Tesla's sales, particularly in Germany and France, has raised questions about the influence of Elon Musk’s political activities on the brand’s reputation and consumer perception. Many consumers have voiced their discomfort with Musk’s public support for political causes, especially his recent endorsements of far-right movements.
One of the most contentious issues has been Musk’s outspoken support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right political party. Ahead of Germany’s early general elections on February 23, Musk made headlines by expressing his support for the party. He controversially argued in an op-ed for the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that labeling AfD as an extreme right-wing party was a mistake, even describing it as “Germany's last hope.” Additionally, Musk held a public conversation with Alice Weidel, the co-leader of the AfD, in January, further fueling criticism.
Musk’s political comments, including his call for the expulsion of large numbers of immigrants from Germany and his use of Nazi-era rhetoric, have led to significant public backlash. His remarks have made many Germans uncomfortable, and some critics have accused Musk of inciting division and intolerance.
Political Divide Reflects in Consumer Behavior
Tesla owners in Germany and other European countries have increasingly distanced themselves from Musk, with many expressing their dissatisfaction by placing anti-Musk stickers on their vehicles. One German entrepreneur reported a surge in demand for stickers that read “I bought this car before Elon went crazy,” stating that orders have been flooding in, with 2,000 orders received over a single weekend. This growing trend of consumer discontent highlights the deepening divide between Musk’s political stance and the preferences of Tesla’s European customer base.
The support for AfD in Germany has also gained traction, with recent opinion polls showing the party’s approval rating surpassing 20%, a historic high. If these trends continue, the AfD could become the second-largest political party in Germany following the upcoming elections. This development, however, also highlights the significant opposition to the party, with many citizens opposing its ideologies and political agenda.
Impact of Musk's Political Stance on Tesla’s European Future
The question remains whether Tesla can recover from this political fallout in Europe. While the demand for electric vehicles in general is growing, Tesla’s sales decline signals that the company’s association with Musk's controversial political positions may be having a lasting impact. As consumers continue to express their dissatisfaction with his actions, Tesla may need to reassess how its CEO’s political views affect the brand’s image and its future in key European markets.
The situation serves as a reminder that the global success of major corporations like Tesla is not solely dependent on product performance or innovation but also on the public image of their leadership. As Musk’s political involvement continues to stir controversy, Tesla's ability to maintain its position as a leader in the electric vehicle market in Europe may face significant challenges in the years ahead.
