Gasoline vs Electric Fuel Cost Calculator
Gasoline vs Electric Fuel Cost Calculator
Enter your monthly distance and efficiency to compare monthly and yearly fuel costs for a gasoline (or diesel) car versus an EV. Add the price gap between two cars to see how many years of fuel savings it takes to recover it. Use the unit selector to switch between US (miles · gallons) and Canada (kilometres · litres).
Enter how much more the EV costs than the gasoline car. Leave it at 0 to skip the payback period.

Frequently asked questions
How are fuel costs calculated?
US mode: monthly fuel cost = monthly distance ÷ fuel economy (mpg) × fuel price; monthly charging cost = monthly distance ÷ EV efficiency (miles per kWh) × charging rate. Canada mode: monthly fuel cost = monthly distance × fuel consumption (L/100km) ÷ 100 × fuel price; monthly charging cost = monthly distance × EV consumption (kWh/100km) ÷ 100 × charging rate. Yearly savings = monthly savings × 12. The payback period = price gap ÷ yearly savings; if yearly savings are zero or less, the gap is never recovered on fuel alone.
Where do the default values come from?
US defaults are examples: gasoline $3.50/gallon, diesel $3.80/gallon, home charging $0.17/kWh. Canada defaults: gasoline $1.854/L, the national average on October 14, 2026 (Natural Resources Canada), and home charging $0.166/kWh, the national residential average in March 2026. Canadian prices vary a lot by province: that same day, gasoline averaged 155.4 cents/L in Alberta and 216.5 cents/L in Newfoundland and Labrador. Fuel and charging prices change by place and time, so replace them with your local prices before relying on a result.
Is home charging cheaper?
Often, yes. Home or apartment slow charging is usually cheaper than public fast charging, but rates vary with your tariff, membership, or provider discounts. Charging only on ultra-fast public chargers costs more than the defaults above. Enter your own rate for an accurate result.
Can real efficiency differ?
Yes. Official fuel economy and efficiency vary with driving habits, seasons, heating and air conditioning, and city versus highway driving. EV efficiency drops notably in winter. This calculator compares fuel only and excludes insurance, taxes, maintenance, and battery replacement.
